Tis the Season!

So tis the season to be jolly. Considering Christmas is so close and it is a known fact that most people should be jolly. I like this statement and I don’t. I do not understand why it should take a certain month to make people in a good mood or at least treat others nicely. I feel that this time of year brings out the worst in people especially with customers shopping for gifts. People need to stop and think that they were probably once doing that job in their lifetime or I am sure they have a loved one who works in retail.

On the other hand I am a waitress and I experience the negativity also. I worked a lunch shift on black friday and I received horrible tips and also had grouchy people to wait on. It is not my fault these people woke at up at 4 a.m. to go save some money and then decide to not tip me with the money they saved. I just do not understand. Also when I walk up to a table I just do not understand why people are so rude! I did nothing to these people but tell them my name and ask what they would like to drink and I guess that just brings out the worst in people. I would be embarrassed of myself if I ever treated someone the way many people treat severs.

All in all I wish people would think twice on how they are treating others and if it takes the statement Tis the Season, then use it and be merry!

Net Neutrality

I recently had to write a paper for My IS 376 class which is Information and Society. The paper was over Net neutrality. I had no idea what that was. The article my professor gave me to read did not really describe it well. So I started doing some research online and found a 2 minute video that described it very well.

Net Neutrality is what the Internet has now. It says that everyone who has access to the Internet has the same advantage as everyone else. Well some companies have a problem with this. AT&T and Verizon are just a few of the companies that want to put a price on Internet. They want people to have to pay a price to have fast Internet. They think that they should have a so-called ”secret portal” which connects them to the page they are trying to get to faster than the “average Joes” who are also on the Internet at the same time. It is basically saying well we are rich companies so we should be better than you.

I feel that this is not fair. Technology is always changing and it would be hard to keep up with the different aspects of who pays for what and who gets what. Also what happens if someone needs to get on the Internet for an emergency and they are not able to do it fast enough because net neutrality has been taken away??

Just wondering how everyone else felt on this topic?

two Gosselins expelled

We all know of the Gosselins and many of us became “obsessed” with the family of sextuplets and twins a few years ago. The show started off as a reality series showing the struggles and every day life of raising 8 children who are very close in age. After the show aired the Gosselins gained a huge fan base. I personally was one of the fans. I was obsessed with the show and never missed an episode. The fast fame took a toll on the family and after some time, Kate and Jon Gosselin decided to end their marriage and get a divorce. The show stopped for a while and now there is a new show on TLC called Kate plus 8. I know personally my following on the show has stopped due to the fact that the fame has seemed to get to Kate’s head.

Now that all of this has been said, today on People.com the second most read story was about two of the Gosselin kids being expelled from their private school. Alexis and Collin age 6 both were expelled for supposed bullying and violence. The children are going through a lot of changes due to the parents divorce and also growing up and starting to realize how famous the family is and the negative outlook a lot of people have on their parents. The two are now being homeschooled and Kate started that she does not think this issue is anyone elses business and should be kept private. Good for her!

Do you think that this should even be in the news? Or should the kids just be left alone and any news about them should be positive or else kept in private?

Wow I did not know any of this!! and I am from Alton. They are definatley not getting the word out. I do not agree with the $200 charge. I really think this will affect the parade. Alton’s Halloween parade has been on of the best for a long time. The fun of it was seeing the DIFFERENT ways all of the floats were decorated. Hopefully after this year which is sad to say will probably not be the best turn out they will change it back!

I am also obsessed with teen mom. The show really does show the stuggles teen moms have to deal with daily. I know I recently was pusing my nephew around the mall and recieved plenty of off looks as if I were a teen mom even though I am 22. The looks alone would make any teen mom uncomfortable. On the Amber situation I think she is a bit crazy. She does need help and I do think her baby Leah should not be alone with her if that is possiable. That poor baby is already going to have a messed up life after seeing all of the abuse her mother and father put onto each other.

I know im a big procrastinator but I am getting better. I wish I was not this way but I just can not seem to get motivated to do something that I have some time to do the next day even if it is as 10:00 at night after I get off work. In my IS class we have a lot of papers to write and recently I have started them a few days before they are due and it has been great! I have not been so stressed. Hopefully I can keep this up when I am in the real world!

I didn’t even know about this until just about and hour ago I was on facebook and someones status was about his arrest. I do not think it will do any thing negative for the singer. Like you said he is known to be usually under the influence and of course he is going to have it on him. I can think of plenty of songs that he blunty talks about getting high. So its a bummer that he got arrested but im sure hes doing it right now

I know Im very guilty of saying I saw it on facebook. Im constantly telling my friends about something and they ask how do you know, my response is facebook. I have done some fibbing on my posts forsure. There are also the people who enjoy writing song lyrics on their status and it is hard to tell if it is a song or just something that is going on with that person right then.

That is pretty funny. That would have caught my attention also. I kinda hope its a PR stunt. I do not see why a male talk show host would want to have a face peel. I guess everyone needs a little extra cash now and then and maybe it is just his time.

I feel the same way! I went to community college after highschool where I was studying nursing. I did a complete turn around when I decided to come to SIUE and get my bachelors in Public Relations. I am also scared about graduating and not finding a job. I feel that I have worked way too hard in school to have to stay working at the job I am now.

Aw this is super sad, I agree completely he should not be punished for a 12 hr time difference and also for having a learning disability. The poor kid has probably felt left out most of his life because of it and now there is a law that is making him be left out? That is not cool at all! I also understand that a law is a law but come on.

It is very scary that people are putting their every move and every location they are at and who with. I know on facebook there is an app where you can say where you are at and tag people along with you. Once it is on facebook you can click on the address and it will mapquest it for you. Such as your place of work or even your home. Very creepy!

go Lindy! I agree with you also. On a different note though I feel that everyone should have some sort of respect for eachother or atleast have the decency to be nice to eachother. I am a waitress and I encounter people who I have never seen in my life and they have never met me and as I walk up to their table they have a sour look on their face and are completly rude! I just do not understand some people. Everyone deserves respect.

Big bodies Big Fame

Today in class the issue was brought up about people becoming famous for being over weight or having a large weight loss. Examples were Jared from subway and also Kirstie Alley and her show ” Big Life” which is about her adventure with weight loss. Another person who has become famous is Ruby. She is an overweight lady who has her own reality show showing her struggles with weight and how it affects her everyday life.

Also mentioned was the fact that these shows are expressing that it is okay to be over-weight and live an unhealthy lifestyle. Along with the subway commercials and the reality shows a new sitcom has just started. Mike and Molly is a show on CBS about two people meeting at an overeaters anonymous meeting and starting a romance. There has been a lot of negative feedback on the show as well as some positive.

Do you think the channels who do have the reality shows and sitcoms are giving themselves bad PR or should this not even be and issue?

I personally do not think it should be an issue. There are so many people out their with eating disorders which makes them super skinny and they are all over the media and there is a new series on E about outrageous eating disorders which shows the opposite of being overweight and that show is a little more intense than showing an overweight person and their daily struggles. Even though being over-weight is a very unhealthy lifestyle, is it refreshing to see people who are famous and are not super skinny.

Voting

Today is election day. The commercials have been going on for months and signs have been displayed all over. It is impossible to drive down the street without seeing advertising for either republican or democratic officials. Facebook statuses are preaching voting and some others are just expressing the fact that they are happy today is voting day and the commercials and signs will be off and down.

Many students our age are not into politics and yet some others feel very strong on their beliefs. I personally wish I knew more about politics and was more informed or at least better understand what really is going on with our government.

Many of you may have seen in the quad today that there was man preaching about his beliefs and drew quite a crowd. He was preaching about how jesus is lord and things in that nature and then he also began shouting how being gay is wrong. A friend of mine who happens to be gay was passing by and became very offended.

My question is do you think that politicians are a lot like preachers? Should he have been allowed to be in the quad stating his point even if it offended people? And would you do PR for a person like him? or a politician that you didn’t agree with and you just needed the job?

New Youtube Sensation??

I have noticed lately that many of my friends have been posting videos on Facebook of the “kid” who does all the lip syncing of popular songs. His name is Keenan and he looks like he is about 10 years old. But he has a disability where his growth is insufficient and he is older than he looks, he is 15 years old. At first, I know I was freaked out when watching his videos. I thought he was a creep but after watching an interview he did my mind has changed. He is just a young guy living life the to fullest. He had brain stem surgery and he is living his life the way he wants along with making people laugh every time they look at this videos.

Keegan has obviously made a name for himself and become somewhat famous. YouTube is now a spot for many people to be discovered, Justin Bieber for one was discovered by YouTube. I was interested to see what everyone else thought, is Keegan just a creepy kid? Or do you think he should be living his life the way he wants to even if people are sick of seeing him?

Marijuana Pepsi

After becoming an aunt I have been more and more interested in babies and the names people choose for their child. I know in class we had discussed how someones name can sadly determine if that person gets the job or not that you are applying for. I personally have a different name and would not change it for the world. I like being unique but the mother of a guidance counselor went a little too far. She named her daughter Marijuana Pepsi. The woman is oddly enough a college guidance counselor. Her mother thought by naming her Marijuana pepsi that it would take her places. I really don’t understand what she could have been thinking. She would not allow her daughter’s teachers as a child nick name her MJ, they had to call her Marijuana. I recently heard about a child being name ABCDE (ab see day) and le-a (le dash a) pronouncing the dash. I understand everyone is different but I just don’t understand the fact that these children’s parents are not thinking about the torment they will be put through from cruel kids growing up or how an employer might just see the name and thing wow I can not pronounce this and just throw their application to the side. Does anyone else think that having an off the wall name out hurt the persons chances of getting a job in the future???

Sister Wives

Once I saw the commercials for Sister Wives on TLC I knew I had to watch it and check it out. Today in class Leah did her PRime time on the television show. If you did u not catch this; the show is about a mormon family that has one husband and three wives soon for be four. Only one of the marriages is legal which was his first marriage. All of the wives live in the same house which is separated into different apartments for each individual wife and her kids she has had with the one husband. The wives all consider each other sisters and were all raised if polygamous families themselves. Their children go to the a school where all of the families are mormon and live the same sort of lifestyle. The question today was brought up asking if TLC should discontinue the series due to the fact that the husband is being investigated due to the fact that he has so many spouses. I do not think the show should be cancelled it is showing a way of life that is out there and educating people. Even thought I disagree with the lifestyle these people live and it is almost degrading to women I do not think it is anyones business to say how they should live their lives when they knew what they were getting into when they entered the relationship. I was wondering what others thought about TLC keeping the series on and if they are producing bad PR for the channel??

Breast Cancer Awarness

Some of us have been affected personally by cancer, but almost all of us have had family members affected by it. My family personally was affected most by breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Susan G Komen is the leader in the breast cancer movement. The foundation was started because Nancy Brinker’s sister (Susan Komen) died from breast cancer. Nancy promised her sister she would do whatever it took to fight for the cure of breast cancer. From the help of donations and funding from many organizations and businesses, Susan G Komen is the largest non-profit organization fighting for breast cancer. Susan G Komen is known for “race for the cure.” The pink ribbon seen in many places is a way to show you support the search for the cure of breast cancer. Many big companies such as Yoplait and Sutter Home are supporters. They have the ribbon on their merchandise showing they support the search. I think the companies made a great PR decision by choosing to show that they care about the search for the cure to end cancer. Many people who are deciding which product to purchase will choose the one with the pink ribbon on it just because they know the money they are spending is going to help with the search for the cure to end breast cancer.
